Bishop Daniel Ryan

Former bishop of Springfield, Illinois

Presented by RCF as a pedophile and a sexual predator.

Bishop Daniel Ryan Lawsuit filed in Springfield
Bishop Ryan named as defendant

On Thursday, October 28, attorneys for a 30-year old former altar boy filed a lawsuit against a priest, two former bishops, and the diocese of Springfield in Illinois.

The law offices of Frederic W. Nessler of Springfield and Ross & Rubino of Margate City, New Jersey filed multiple allegations on behalf of 30-year-old Matthew McCormick, a former altar boy in the Springfield diocese who alleges that, over a three-year period in the early 1980s he was sexually assaulted, battered, and psychologically abused by Rev. Alvin J. Campbell, former pastor of St. Maurice Church in Morrisonville, Illinois. Campbell served seven of a fourteen year sentence for child molestation charges (unrelated to this case) and currently resides in Florida.

Also named in the lawsuit were Former Springfield Bishop Joseph A. McNicholas (deceased), the Diocese of Springfield, and recently retired

Bishop Daniel Ryan of Springfield. McCormick charges that these three parties were involved in an extensive cover-up of Campbell's pedophilic activities; moreover, that:

BISHOP RYAN ignored his oath and obligation of celibacy by virtue of multiple homosexual relationships with then, now former, male prostitutes and other priests or deacons to wit: John Doe X, John Doe Y, and Reverend Father John Doe Z (the identities of whom are known to the Defendants) among others, during his tenure as Bishop to such an extent that an atmosphere of tolerance to the sexual abuse of minors was thereby created, facilitated, and perpetuated by DEFENDANT RYAN.

Bishop Ryan's Resignation Announcement
The following information was sent to the priests of the Springfield Diocese from John Renken, the Springfield Diocese Vicar General:

Below is the statement of Bishop Ryan, former Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, made public at 5:00 AM today. For your information. A press conference is scheduled for 10:00 AM today at the Catholic Pastoral Center. More details will come as they are available. John Renken

The Vatican daily newspaper, l'Osservatore Romano, under today's date, carries an item indicating that our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has accepted my resignation as Bishop of Springfield in Illinois. At the same time he has appointed as bishop of our diocese the Reverend Monsignor George Lucas, M.A. Monsignor Lucas is a priest of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, currently rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary there.

I am grateful to our Holy Father for allowing me to retire and for sending a very fine priest, whom I know and esteem, to be ordained bishop as my successor. Monsignor Lucas is a person of keen intelligence, devoted to Christ and His people, kind and pastoral in his outlook. I will be in the front of the line to welcome him and to assure him of my full cooperation and support.

I have felt for some little time that I should step aside and have an opportunity for another type of service to our Lord's people than that of being "where the buck stops." My next birthday will be my seventieth. While I will want to discuss the details of my retirement with Bishop-elect Lucas, I look forward to spending it here in our diocese, which I have come to know and to love as my home. Living and working with all of you has been truly the greatest enjoyment and privilege of my life. I look forward to continuing our friendship and mutual support, in service of our Lord and His people.

When I have information regarding the date of Bishop-elect Lucas' ordination and installation as bishop, I will share it with you. Until his ordination/installation the diocesan administrator, who will be elected within a few days by the priests of this diocese who are diocesan consulters, will be responsible for the running of the diocese.

Do pray for Bishop-elect Lucas, for our soon-to-be-elected diocesan administrator, for myself, and for yourselves, whom I am happy to number among the wonderful people whom both Bishop-elect Lucas and I will have had the privilege to serve in the name of our Lord.

Be assured of my prayers and of my deep affection for you!

+Most Reverend Daniel L. Ryan
Former Bishop of Springfield in Illinois

The Crime:  Defending morally justifiable protection for the unborn.
An unpopular position not considered "Politically Correct."

Pope John Paul II's Vatican theologians have been equally divided on the unpopular position. But Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb, a protector of pedophiles who still receive archdiocesan financial support — in addition to costs associated with their grave immoral activities, has taken away income from one who has not opposed any defined Catholic Church teaching.
